Do You WBT?

Have you done any web-based training (WBT), whether for your business, job, or  education?

This summer I've gained some vicarious experience at the Michigan Virtual High School.  My daughter is taking an online American Government course, and it's interesting to watch her. She reads her online government "book" and then completes various assignments which she emails to her teacher across the state. After every unit, she takes an online test.  To help stay on track, she goes to the school media center once a week to work and touch base with a local teacher.

This is all very good, right? Flexible. Mobile. 24/7.  At least it's great if you're not on vacation, which we were last week.  It's one thing for Cait to stay up late on her own time at home, but in a hotel room, a glowing screen at one in the morning can be hazardous to her parents' sleep. And, spending time in a hotel room for half a day to watch her churn out assignments wasn't exactly what we had in mind when we headed for Michigan's great "Up North".

But, all in all, it worked out well. Being able to learn at a distance allowed us to go on a family vacation. And although Cait didn't get as much done as she hoped, she was able to complete enough  that she won't be in a complete panic when she comes back from drama camp later this month.

So, do you WBT?  Does anyone else in your family? Would you ever consider getting an online degree? How can web-based training help you with your business?

Hey, Lynn, our son (age 30) recently decided it was finally time to complete his degree. Marriage, mortgage, job, and kids sometimes has that effect on people. Still doesn't know what he wants to be when he grows up, so he is working toward a business degree. His schedule is hectic, so he is doing online courses. I thought he would surely miss classroom discussions, etc., but so far it has been working out well for him. He has seven courses done - and seven A's!

Our assistant pastors wife teaches math in the virtual school program.  They just had a a baby and she didn't want to teach in the traditional system anymore.  Her schedule is flexible so that when her baby is asleep she is actually working and grading papers on the computer all at her home.  She has @ 180 students that she counsels and works with usually in the evenings when the students are off from work.  By the way she says she is making more money now than when she was in the traditional system.

Dear Norma: Congratulations on the new customer! Glad to hear that the Double X samples and the ads are supporting your selling efforts.

As for WBT, have you tried any of the online courses on Quixar University? If yes, what other courses would you like to see?

Lynn,

I work for a major cellular carrier and we occasionally do WBT, the courses on QU are as good as or better than any I've taken with the company I work for!

Perhaps the only improvement I can see is to somehow remind IBO's that many times we have to keep going over the material. It helps to go through it once, but it really affects us when we've gone over it several times and then apply it as we go out and talk with people.

It looks like Amway Global has definitely taken it to the next level.

Dear Visioneer: Thanks for your comments. You've pointed out how it isn't enough to learn, you also have to go out and apply what you've learned. We're learning from you all the time, and we're working to apply it. Amway Global needs to take training to the next level to support IBOs taking their business to the next level.

Dear Marsha and Mark: There was a glitch in the system so I could not see your comments until someone else pushed them through. I love your stories that show how online learning can be a lifesaver for those who need flexibility in their lives--whether on the student or teacher side. For all of you: here is an update on my daughter's American Government experience. She got an A! She worked until the very last day available, including one all-nighter. But she got it done and freed up her schedule for this coming year so that she could take an elective.
